Writing doesn’t come by birth â€" it comes with practice and learning. And it all starts when we’re kids. Some write just like that, like a daily ritual but when your writing creates a certain impact on the society, it has some meaning, it dictates a story and it holds an audience, well, then I guess you’re a WRITER.Writing is a magic that takes you to a thought-process and lets you have a different perspective towards each thing. Help! I cant answer the question! You’ve prepared properly for the interview, it’s all going swimmingly and then along comes a tricky question   suddenly your mind goes completely blank. It’s happened to us all, but what you do next might determine whether it’s game over, or whether you can prove your resilience and get a bit closer to that job offer. The first thing you need to do, is think about  what kind of question  you are facing. This will determine your response. A competency question I once dried at interview when I was asked to talk about a time when I had worked with someone difficult. Now, I have, over the years, worked with plenty of difficult people, so why did I suddenly forget? Probably because I hadn’t seen this coming â€" poor planning and because what sprang into my mind was a negative experience. I did not want to talk about  this at  interview. It is never good to be negative about previous employment. I did the right thing, I asked to come back to the question later, but then I let it play on my mind while I answered successive questions. It distracted me and impacted my performance. Do ask to come back to a question but don’t then stop concentrating on everything else! A technical question If your degree studies are relevant to your job application then you might find youre asked technical questions. Try not to panic about questions you find difficult, the more anxious you are, the more likely it is that your mind will go blank. Take time to think. Employers will almost always be happy for you to pause, they would rather have an employee who reflects on difficult questions than one who rushes in and makes errors! Remember that a pause while you think will feel much longer to you than it actually is.  Remember too, that employers may ask questions knowing that you will not be able to answer them. They may just be wanting to see what progress you can make with logic. They may also be  keen to test to the point at which you no longer have an answer! You might have got a lot further than other candidates before you had to admit defeat. Try not to feel deflated or let your disappointment at not answering everything play on your mind during the rest of the interview. An oddball question Odd questions are often talked about and can be much feared. How many bricks are there in Birmingham? How many pints of milk are drunk each day in the UK? You are not expected to know the answer to these questions, just try not to freeze completely. The important thing is how you start to think and reason your way to an answer. Demonstrate that you are logical and that you can keep calm under pressure and you are a long way to success. A strengths question You would have thought that a question about how you spend your spare time, or what you do to relax, would be very simple. Sometimes it can floor you because you are trying to think of something which sounds worthwhile and impressive, when actually you’re busy thinking that you like going shopping with friends! It’s worth thinking about answers in advance, but ultimately if the unexpected question comes, you need to answer honestly. You’re likely to get caught out in a strengths based interview if you lie. Make sure that you have a really clear understanding of the skills an employer is looking for, this should help you when you meet the unexpected strengths question. You do need to come out with an answer, this isn’t a question where you can take  a long time to ponder. A commercial awareness question Everyone knows that you need to exhibit an understanding of the business world if you want to land that graduate job. Generally you will be able to choose what news item you want to talk about, but what if you get asked the totally unexpected question? How about, “What companies would you invest in if you had £1 million?” This sort of question demands the knack of applying knowledge you have, and the ability to keep calm and to start talking logically, perhaps in this context you might start by considering sector areas? Its about buying yourself some time while you wait for inspiration to strike. So the lessons from all this? There will be times in an interview when no answer springs to mind. Generally try to keep calm, take a deep breath and don’t be afraid to ask for thinking time.

Model introduction I want to introduce you to another significant model that well be using and referring to moving forward. When I started speaking about personal branding two years ago, my message was about promotion, not just self-promotion, but promotion in general. You also want to promote others, who will reciprocate by promoting you. By promoting both yourself and others, you have more than doubled the amount of visibility and opportunities you will receive as a result. It wasnt until the past few months, where protection became a core component of my speeches and articles. The Clam Model of Protection is born out of the seriousness and immediacy of brand name claiming and security. The model represents the protection your personal brand will receive from identity theft, name duplication and competitive threats, if you aggressively claim your brand name. How the model works Every time you claim your brand name, either on a social network, domain, blog, etc, the shell of the clam closes slightly. Your object is to have the clams shell cover your brand name completely. When this occurs, you are protected and have ownership of your brand. As more name claiming opportunities open up, so does the shell of the clam, which means you need to ensure those are secure as well. When using the Clam Model of Protection, you have to constantly monitor the web, by subscribing to blogs, in order to be aware of the next big network that you need to claim your name on. Laggards will lose the opportunity to rank high for their own name and the ease of discovery for people who want to find them. They will also be forced to brand themselves differently than they would have. For centuries, weve celebrated our most famous inventors and innovators from Ben Franklin and Thomas Edison to Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg. For each well-known name, there are countless men and women who have worked behind the scenes to send us into outer space, develop life-saving pharmaceuticals, and create the everyday technologies like the microwave that we take for granted. We may not have always referred to these endeavors as STEM, but they are accurately representative of what STEM-driven education can do. Todays World There is a high demand for qualified STEM workers here in the United States, and in countries around the world. Its not surprising when you consider that there is a direct correlation between STEM-based industries and economic development. Experts attribute at least half of Americas economic growth over the past 50 years to new technology and advancements made in these fields. Todays economy presents a challenge for the United States as we strive to preserve our countrys reputation for innovation and leadership in a global economy. In order to remain competitive, the country needs a steady stream of STEM workers. People who have the creativity, knowledge and passion for discovery have the potential to create new advancements that can literally change and improve the human condition while also adding economic value to our nation. Not everyone has what it takes to commit to years of formal study and hands-on learning. Those who do can look forward to a successful career as a scientist, engineer, mathematician or technology expert. A Worthwhile Endeavor Data released by the United States Census Bureau in early 2012 showed some encouraging trends: * People with even the minimum of an associates degree in a STEM field earn more than those with a liberal arts bachelors degree. * An adult with an associates degree in engineering earned an average of $4,800 monthly (2009). * More than 30 percent of Americans ages 25+ have earned at least a bachelors degree. * Approximately 4.5 million adults hold a bachelors degree in engineering. * Of the estimated 56 million Americans with at least a bachelors degree, 35 percent have a degree in a STEM field. The one employment factor that hasnt changed is the low representation of women working in STEM fields. Men hold nearly 90 percent of all engineering degrees, outnumbering women at a ratio of 3 to 1 in the other STEM disciplines. Younger women (under 40) are making headway, earning approximately 20 percent of engineering degrees thereby doubling the number of their female predecessors. What Next? In Forbes magazines annual survey of the best (and worst) masters degrees for jobs in 2012 and beyond, the T in STEM was at the top. Computer science ranked as the number two best advanced degree for jobs, with mid-career median pay for graduates coming in at approximately $109,000. Better yet, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (as quoted by Forbes) indicates that employment opportunities for those with a computer science degree are expected to expand about 22 percent between now and 2020. Electrical engineering and physics degrees also appeared in the top 10 of Forbes survey. Workers who earned one of these degrees average a mid-career salary of more than $110,000 a year. Biology and chemistry were lower in the list, but that should not dissuade anyone who is passionate about those sciences. After all, the point of pursuing a masters degree is not just about immediate short-term gain. Its about the opportunities that can arise over the long term, including the chance to achieve a greater level of job satisfaction. And thats something money cant buy.
